The Mysterious Number 80 Crantham Street - Background Scenarios Police Station

As the rehearsal schedule continues, I find myself raiding my audio library to uncover anything that might enhance this audio drama podcast. However, I made an early decision that, for the main scenes, I wanted to create background atmospheres using genuine voices rather than AI. Of course, some of the background recordings I've found already contain muffled voices, but for the audio environments I create myself, I wanted to use real people and make them sound as authentic as possible.

This is why I've scheduled a series of background recording sessions to complement my scenes, including busy offices, street settings and late-night activities, all of them improvised.

My first background recording took place on Tuesday, 9th June, with many of the team I work with in my day job. Some readers may already know that I earn a living filming events, meetings, conferences and factual information videos for local government, which is a far cry from the fantasy and horror genre that currently occupies so much of my imagination.

On Tuesday, we recreated a police station environment, complete with a busy call centre, with those kindly taking part providing the actions and reactions required by the script. This is one of three background scenarios I am creating, and I was delighted by how enthusiastically everyone threw themselves into it.

I think we all need a little escapism from time to time. I know I certainly do, and it was wonderful to see my usual colleagues stepping into different characters and embracing the experience.
